Australia is a great place to be at any time of year, but if you have a choice of when to go, you may want to consider weather conditions and Australian school holidays.
Keep to the southern coasts in summer and head north for the winter
South Australia
The best time to visit the south is during Australia’s summer, from December to March, though long summer (school) holidays from Christmas through January mean that prices are higher and beaches more crowded.
Central Australia Australia’s interior is an arid semi-desert with very little rain, high summer temperatures and occasionally freezing winter nights. Central Australia has the most comfortable temperatures in October and November and from March to May.
North Australia In the tropical north, it’s best to visit from May to October to avoid the wet and very humid summer season, when the sea is also full of box jellyfish!
Wintersport If you enjoy winter sports, Australia’s winter (June to August) offers skiing in NSW and Victoria.
Tasmania
Tasmania’s highlands make for unpredictable weather all year round, although summer is the best time to explore the island’s outdoor attractions.
In spring and autumn the weather is usually mild.
