Rather than put stories here that I find interesting (a subjective and unreliable source of news!) I shall direct you to the major news services in Australia, and their coverage of Tasmanian events:
ABC News: The Australian Broadcasting Corporation is the Australian Government broadcaster for radio and television, much like the BBC is for the UK. Use their site to get comprehensive, unbiased information on the latest news across Australia. They also provide a section specifically for Tasmanian News.
News Corp Papers: Rupert Murdoch’s arm extends far across Australia, with a string of daily newspapers. His nationwide daily is "The Australian", but he also owns The Mercury, the daily tabloid for Tasmanian News (printed in Hobart).
National Nine News: The other big media corporation in Australia is owned by Kerry Packer. He owns the largest commercial television station in Australia, which distributes national news through a web site in association with Microsoft. It is difficult to get information tailored to Tasmania through this site, however.
The Advocate: This is the local paper for North-West Tasmania, and the only local paper still Tasmanian owned.
Travelers can also check the Tasmanian Government’s tourist portal, Tourism Tasmania for the latest information on festivals and events in the state, in particular their events calendar, or by searching the Tasmanian Events Database.
